Houston, we have a problem: Confronting Racism in the Arts, at the Common Field Convening to be held online during April 2020. Registration is free and open to the public.

How does racism show up in the work of artists, arts organizers, and arts administrators? Houston is touted as one of the most diverse U.S. cities, however it remains racially and economically segregated, manifesting inequities and silos in the arts, as in every aspect of life. This segregation creates disparities in opportunities, funding, leadership, and critical coverage for artists and organizations. How can our stories generate dynamics for a more racially just arts community?

Cherry Steinwender and Laura Gallier will facilitate a dialogue to begin an exploration of our racial conditioning and empower ourselves to be agents of change. The Houston-based conversation will focus on identifying various forms of racism using examples from recent news articles and artist projects. This session values deep listening and sharing community knowledge and experience. Both folks with experience and those new to conversations on racism and equity are encouraged to participate. We hope you’ll join us or attend other events at the Convening.

We are excited to have been selected as a presenter at the upcoming Common Field Convening, which will be held here in Houston in April 2020. Common Field is a national organization of independent arts organizations and organizers, which connects, supports, and advocates for independent artists. Our workshop will use small group dialogue to confront racism in the arts by educating artists, arts organizers and administrators about how racism shows up in the arts and empowering them to create more diversity, equity, and inclusion in their work. Registration for the Convening along with the full event schedule will be released in February online here: Convening 2020 / Common Field. Kudos to our new board member Kelly Johnson for connecting us to this event.

“Men hate each other because they fear each other, and they fear each other because they don’t know each other, and they don’t know each other because they are often separated from each other.” Dr. Martin Luther King.

The Center for the Healing of Racism offers Dialogue: Racism, an eight-week process, which provides a safe, respectful, and loving atmosphere for individuals to learn new information, share their experiences, dispel the fears and guilt, get to know each other, and come together.

Defining Prejudice and Racism and How Racism is perpetuated. Childhood experiences, misinformation, and separation. The Eye of the Storm DVD chronicles Jane Elliott’s now famous exercise where she divides her class based upon the color of their eyes and bestows upon one group privileges and on the other group impediments.

Unaware Racism (Implicit Bias) and White Privilege: Unaware racism arises out of racial conditioning that everyone imbibes, often without being aware of it. Far from the overt hatred of racist groups, unaware racism shows up in daily contact among groups. White privilege arises from the systemic advantage of one group over others. White privilege arises from the systemic advantage of one group over others. The DVD White Privilege 101 helps us to see its effects.

Stereotypes and How They Affect Us: The awarding-winning documentary Ethnic Notions shows the deep-rooted stereotypes and dehumanizing caricatures that have fueled anti-Black prejudice.

Cultural Racism: Culture is transmitted through language and traditions, both verbally and non-verbally. When one culture is regarded as standard, even superior, other cultures and their cultural forms are denigrated. When a group’s culture is held to be inferior, cultural genocide can result. The film Healing the Hurts depicts the effects of residential schools on Native Americans.

Internalized Racism: When the anger, hurt, and frustration turn inward. The short film Shadeism explores the discrimination that exists between thelighter-skinned and darker-skinned members of the same community and how it affects young women within the African, Caribbean, and South Asian Diasporas.

Institutionalized Racism: Exploring the systems that affect us daily: the media, justice, educational, health care and economic systems. Viewing the DVD of the keynote address by Michelle Alexander on her book The New Jim Crow, we will hear her finding, “There are more African Americans under correctional control today—in prison or jail, on probation or parole—than were enslaved in 1850, a decade before the Civil War began.”

Oneness of Humanity and The Next Steps: Race is a human invention. We will view the DVD Race: The Power of an Illusion, “one of the most honest and compelling documentary series on race and its impact on this nation’s culture and politics, as well as on economic status.” Once we see our oneness, we’ll explore some of the ways to put this knowledge into action.

The sessions are free and open to the public, donations encouraged; registration is required by emailing cfhr1@juno.com or calling the Center’s office at (713) 520-8226. Parking on Houston Community College Lot 9.

The Mission of the Center for the Healing of Racism: Our mission is to facilitate the healing of racism through education and dialogue in a safe and supportive environment in order to empower individuals and transform communities.

Day 1: Depart, HCC Parking Lot 9, on a video WIFI and restroom equipped motor coach, enjoying the great scenery along the way. Our first tour will be St. Joseph Plantation, a sugar cane plantation. Currently, the second season of Oprah Winfrey’s Queen Sugar is being filmed there. Our next stop is Laura Plantation, a Creole Plantation. Creole life in Louisiana exhibited a unique, characteristic thread: the understanding that the family operated as a business and that the business was family. Conclude the evening with dinner and relaxing.

Day 2: After enjoying a continental breakfast, begin your day with Whitney Plantation. Whitney Plantation is a genuine landmark built by African slaves and their descendants. As a site of memory and consciousness, the Whitney Plantation Museum is meant to pay homage to all slaves on the plantation itself and to all of those who lived elsewhere in the US South. Upon arrival, you will visit the Gift Shop; then a 90-minute tour of Whitney Plantation. After the tour, you will sit in the picnic area …a perfect time to review your trip and dialogue about all the historical sights before departing for home.
